Jhumka, Chandbali or Chandelier? The Difference

The three names get used interchangeably. They are different shapes.

Jhumka

A dome, like an inverted bell, hanging from a stud. It swings and often has a small bead edge or tassel.

Chandbali

A crescent or half-moon, the name meaning "moon-piece". It frames the face and usually sits in a larger, flatter shape.

Chandelier

A layered earring with tiers or strands that move independently. It does not come from one tradition: the name comes from the light fitting.

Which to wear

Jhumkas for everyday ethnic wear and festivals. Chandbalis for weddings and formal ethnic occasions. Chandeliers when you want the earrings to be the statement, with either Indian or western outfits.
